Black on the white marble strut
You priest of nature,
Ecclesiastical bird,
Who'd pause to fix a congregant
With a yellow interrogatory eye,
Who'd overtop herself
With that small importance
Of all who dream enfolded
In that which does not;
Once of stars, I too
Your gaze exchange on smooth stone,
Immortal too to us.

All in all the sea and sky,
The beach like a sleepy gesture curved,
Was a season in a day, an hour,
A glance.
A sun and shadow:
How tedious are these weathers
That engulf without a touch.

With downcast eyes madonna up
To heaven,
Whose presence is your host?
What perturbs a drop of rain upon your arm,
What turns this light and shade?
In an unreckoned sea
Are you unhanded,
From that with no want to hold.
