A silence as if its medium were gone,
The key depressed the skin caressed
The answer drawn away
In solitudes of many rooms
On trainless platforms waiting
Being is it, stepping shadow to light
To shadow constructions
Of fear and elation; it is itself merely.
In rain the water pools uncollected.

355
The boundary turns with the turner,
And a far stir of sky dusts a sandal.
The methodical air treats with but one observer,
And the memory of a distant other,
With eyes raised up, apart
Conjoined in the circumambient sea.

354
White stone in a field smooth to softness,
Fellow to the waves in time and chance grace,
In my palm warm with confederate urgency;
Extrinsic to none.

"What swimming person, provided he is not about to drown, can help being in excellent spirits?"
--Robert Walser

352
Tended heart, if it waits,
Waits for death in its beating
Conjugation of days and hours
Years marking, being, time.
Untended middle, first, last,
In single strand unfated.

This over-reaching sky tells the smallness of our haste.
Still this touch, still leaf, flower;
We've spent this hour in three.
The sky's moment descending admits our arms' vast sweep,
Our eyes' myriad compass, one breath a life,
A handclasp become a thing incorporate.
In this uncustomed place our thought is voice,
Our dream and fear undoored as an empty room.

346
Summer in still empire
City in barred noon segmented
Light; columned cell wall shadow,
Or 'neath a slatted porch on the sea.

344
Incapable of a thing in youth
And age incapable with words
And without.
.
Not through sundial need,
But desire forest-leaved
Ever fraction lit.
.
In the clearing is a space of earth and answering sky,
In rude mirror silent,
Self-sufficient.

Out the window my cigarette
Bodys the uncircumstanced air.
.
In the day stream--
The vagrant happenstance of 1st Ave--
A finger might be dipped, a still drop held there.
.
On your little porch, how the shadows
Set the ivy, just so.

By my own motion did I secondly devise
An unlocking of best locked.
.
A fine-haired limb
Peremptory: be gone; serve.
.
In act three scene two
The car port was a square of sun.

336
Incongruous today, local circumstance--
Intuition-slid and reason shown back
Unpatterned, self-broken.
.
In the arboretum the rooks looked but coldly upon me
Amid the indexed green;
"Pretender," they said, "shadow."
.
Next dawn will the horizon straight,
And the eaves pitch obedient,
In despite of the eye and through it, both.

335
The complexity of this armature
In consonant surround,
Is desire and pain.
.
What easement found,
What addition to natured ambiguity,
In this love's shorthand?
.
A slightness in the ocean
Would help, a change in the weather
Of my character.

Of somewhere. Of someone.
Untransacted.
.
At the airport depot
The containers were moving off.
On a monitor: intertwinement
Unknot to fingers. Farewell.
.
Somewhere. Dislocation's isolate
State, in the sun's glare,
Disqualitied, whole to part.
